Hermanus has been a holiday town
from when it was first discovered. A wandering shepherd -
Hermanus Pieters - came across a fresh water spring in the early
1800's whilst looking for grazing for his herd. The grazing at
the spring was good and the shepherd looked about him at
the lagoon, the whales in the bay, and the mountains filled with
birds and flowers; took in a deep breath of "Champagne
Air" and decided that this is where he would bring his
family to live and his cattle to graze in the summer months.
Other inland farmers followed his
example and Hermanus has been one of the most popular seaside
holiday resorts on this coastline ever since.
'RIVIERA
OF THE SOUTH'
The village of Hermanus, although small, offers the
comforts of a city-like infrastructure - it is filled with
charming shops and restaurants that ensure Hermanus lives up to
its name of "Riviera of the South". There are 2 world
class golf courses; bowling, squash and tennis facilities;
doctors and hospitals; a library; a wine-route... and all of
this only 1½ hours drive from Cape Town.
ACTIVITIES
& NATURE
The mountains behind the village are home to the
Fernkloof Nature Reserve - a conservancy area rich in Fynbos and
bird life. There are several walks for all types of hikers. The
reserve also has a cycling trail. (Maps, walking sticks and
general information about the reserve are available in the
little hut in the parking lot.)
The mountains are a popular departure
point for paragliders and the skies are often dotted with the
vibrant colours of people enjoying our picturesque surroundings
from a different perspective.
Hermanus has wonderful beaches and a
magnificent lagoon that enable visitors to enjoy a variety of
water sports from kayaking to sailing to surfing to deep sea
fishing... or simply bathing.
There are many places of historical
interest in Hermanus as well as several art galleries that are
adorned with artworks of local artists - many of whom are
internationally acclaimed.
Hermanus is the perfect holiday spot: not
only is there is something for everyone to do, but it is also
the most beautiful place to do absolutely nothing in! |
